In the last video on my Youtube channel I prepared Slovenian dish called jota - a heart stew with sour turnip, beans, carrots and onion. You can check out the video here (English subtitles available):

In the video I show you both how hilarious I am and also how simple it is to make it. When I was younger I had no feelings towards dishes like that but now - being an old millenial - I see them as delicious meals.

This meatless jota involves carrots and tomato sauce - which is not in a traditional recipe but I thing both ingredients add really delicious flavor.

In the typical Slovenian jota we traditionally also find meat products. I replaced them with something I named “bird cracklings”. Recipe can be found in the vlog. And also I think that the vegetables cooked right have delicious flavor as they are and there is no need to replace meat.

In the jota recipe I also mention that you can cook beans yourself or buy canned one. Also you can go for sauerkraut instead of sour turnip.

If you prepare it using this delicious recipe - post it on social media and don’t forget to add #slovenianjota and #curryandlove :)

Have fun cooking this meatless jota with sour turnip! 😘

For the meatless jota

5 cups 730 g
cooked beans (that around 1 and 1/2 cup of dried beans)
3 tbsp 3 žlice
2 2
3 3
3 3
bay leaves
2 tsp 2 žlički
dimljene paprike smoked paprika
Pepper and salt to taste
4 4
medium sized potatoes
1 l
2 cups 400 g
sour turnip (or sauerkraut)
3/4 cup 2 dl
tomato sauce
1 head 1 head
of garlic

    How to handle the beans?

I recommend you cook the beans yourself. First you soak them overnight. The next day you cook them in fresh water with salt and bay leaves until it becomes soft. If you can’t do this skip this step and use canned ones.

  • 2.

    Let's prepare the veggies

Peel the onions and potatoes (also carrots if you want to). Cut everything to small cubes. Peel the garlic and crush it.

  • 3.

Roasting the onion and carrot with spices

Heat the oil in a pot and add onion and carrots. Add all the spices. Cook for 10 minutes and stir occasionally.

  • 4.

    Potatoes want to join!

Add potatoes, stir and add 1 l of cold water. Cover and cook for 15-20 minutes or until the potatoes are cooked.

  • 5.

Let's wrap up this jota project

Add sour turnip (or sauerkraut), beans and tomato sauce. You can add garlic at this point. I usually add it in the last 5 minutes of cooking so it keeps very strong flavour. Taste the flavor - specially the saltiness and add it if necessary. Cook for additional 20 minutes.

    Serve with ...

Bread (home-baked is the best), red wine and a topping that can be find in the vlog. Dober tek!

What can I tell you? There are as many jotas as there are housewives.
